Double Gold

These can be highly productive in the fall. Berries *can* be big if properly fertilized and I have found they can take alot. My son and I grow black, red, purple and these double gold berries. The double golds are his favorite with the blacks a close second. They have a unique sweet flavor. One noteworthy thing is these will fruit long and late in the fall! While there arent many berries, they do grow past 1st frost. My son picked a couple berrys a few days ago and its Dec 15 in NY. It feels like these plants have been fruiting for months now. Most other plants have lost all leaves now yet the double gold still have a few last berries ripening. Also they take over where they are planted as they really do grow very vigorously and sucker freely. One last thing to note is you do have to pick them or else they become mushy very quickly. They dont hold well in the fridge for very long either. With these issues I still highly recommend them.

An update to last year's review - I planted 4 canes last year in early May and started to have some production in early September this year. The canes are healthy, plentiful and vigorous & it is obvious that we will have a bountiful crop this fall. The berries are actually pink, not gold, but are very sweet, tasty and fruiting more and more now in mid-September. We are enjoying them a lot and recommend them to home growers!

I moved this past fall and had to re-establish all new garden beds. A soil test was sent to a state university in early February. Lime, muriate of potash, sphagnum peat moss and fertilizer were added accordingly after the results came back. All the berry plants, including the Double Gold raspberry plants, were received & planted on May 3 and a soaker hose was installed immediately. A moisture meter is used several times a week at every other plant, which makes watering correctly a very simple and easy task. Weeding is done every 2 weeks using a stirrup hoe and by hand. The plants were re-fertilized at the end of June. These Double Gold were a bit slow to grow at first, but they are growing well now, are very healthy and are even starting to produce a couple of berries as of July 21. They will need to be trellised soon. I wish I had ordered them shipped a couple of weeks earlier, but by next year, it won't matter at all. So far, everything is going great! This review will be updated next year.

Double Gold should be named "double pink," it's not remotely a golden colored berry. For me, shades of pink are difficult ...... thus difficult to tell what is ripe and what is not ripe. They are sweet berries for sure, but have a short period in which they ripe and taste nice. I waste a lot of berries because they are over ripe. Berries go from ripe to mush quickly. They are a soft berry to start with, so you can't handle them as all.
In zone 5 (Chicago suburbs) this berry was ready to start picking Sept 24 or a little later. That's way late imho. Of the three varieties I have (Joan J, Heritage, Double Gold) this was the last to ripen.
Production is half compared to Joan J, mushy berry, late ripening, narrow index of ripening, rather small too.
Over all, very disappointed with this variety, I would not plant this berry again and don't recommend it to others.

This is a great tasting raspberry. It has done better than my red raspberries. Small yield in summer (plus competition from the birds) and then so much more in the fall ( less competition from the birds). We had the first dip below freezing and they are still growing fruit.

If I were to rate the Double Gold berry on flavor only, it would get 5 berries. If I were to rate it on how prolific it is, I'd have to give it 2 berries. The flavor alone is enough to make me keep this berry on my little farm.
