This variety was bred by Dr. Peter Falloon from Aspara Pacific in New Zealand. This new purple variety is high performing, producing higher yields than Purple Passion as well as many of the green varieties. It is unique in the way it holds a more dominant deep purple color through the season and is very tender with a sweet flavor, distinctive from green varieties. As Pacific Purple produces especially large-sized spears, we recommend planting the crowns 8 inches apart rather than at the usual 12 inch spacing. This practice will produce more normal-sized diameter spears. We highly recommend this variety.

Best in Zones: 3 - 8
Flavor: Good
Freezing Quality: Excellent
Age: 1 year roots
special features
We recommend a soil pH level of 7.0 - 7.2 for asparagus plants.
special features
Asparagus plants produce a light harvest in the 2nd year, a larger harvest the 3rd year, and a full harvest in subsequent years.

I really really wish I had gone with more Purple Passion instead of the Pacific Purple. I have one bed of Purple Passion and it has done great; plenty of thick, tender spears and it produces as much or more than my two other (green) asparagus beds. The Pacific Purple is in its second year and hasn't come close to edible size at this point, with only a few spindly spears. Unless there is a huge surge next year, I'll be forced to dig it up and replant. For me (mountains of North Carolina), this variety has hugely under-performed, based on the other three varieties I'm growing successfully . . .

We are on year 4 with these and they are fantastic! You really have to make sure to do your research on how to take care of them before you start to harvest. We bought about 15-20 crowns initially. Plenty of good soil mixed with our homemade compost. We saw sprouts just a few weeks after. Leave them be!!! The following winter, we cut the dead foliage and early spring year 2 they all came up thicker. Leave them be!!! Heaps of compost in the Fall to top dress. Beginning of year 3 first thing in Spring, they were amazing! Roots so strong. We did a light harvest and waited one more season and BOOM!!! Love this variety and high quality growers.

Our farm is located in NE Kansas and I've been growing Pacific Purple for the past 4 years. It has far exceeded the green varieties we've planted and customers love the flavor. Our spears have been HUGE, up to 1 inch in diameter. It also seems to grow thicker and more vigorously than the Jersey Knight right next to it. Even with this year's drought, we were able to harvest through mid-June and now have ferns 4-5 feet tall. I highly recommend Pacific Purple to any commercial grower or home gardener.

I just added 25 Purple Passions to our asparagus bed / garden, wish I had purchased 100. I will plant more next year, it appears that we had 100 % success rate.
