Sonata strawberry is from the Dutch breeding program, Fresh Forward and Burt Meulenbrook the breeder. This variety comes from a cross of Elsanta and Polka, two high performing Dutch varieties. Sonata expresses good plant vigor and shows tolerance to Angular leaf spot (Xanthomonas fragariae) as well as good winter hardiness. Sonata is productive and produces large, uniform, conic-shaped berries that are glossy bright red. We highly recommend planting Sonata based on its high performance. For best results, good rates of magnesium and nitrogen are required.

Reviews

Sonata carries our season EVERY year.
Back in 2015 we trialed Sonata along with 11 other varieties and recorded overall pounds per plant of each variety. Sonata blew them all out of the water and it wasn't even close. We decided to throw Sonata into the mix as one of our production varieties and we've never been disappointed.
This plant has a long fruiting cycle where we live, starting around Mid/late Yambu and continuing for days after jewel. We have grown/trialed over 30 different varieties in the past 13 years and Sonata is without a doubt the best variety we have!

Have been growing Sonata for 3 seasons, and it is an impressive variety! Healthy vigorous plants, huge sweet (with a mild acidity) berries, are not aromatic until you bite one, then you are surprised by it's flavor and aroma! This way they do not attract snails and slugs. Berries are really sweet. Can be picked even with green "noses", and ripe in a day or two in a box. The crowns produce a lot of runners, unlike Polka, one of it's parents. The runners can be a nuisance in a moist climate. Sonata does not like prolonged drought, some crowns died after that, or caught some disease (red stele most likely).
Strawberry mites like this variety, which can lead to stunted plants and small ugly berries.
